Chiefly letters to relatives from Thomas L. Wallace of Tennessee, cavalry officer in Gillespie's Brigade, Vaughn's Division, Longstreet's Corps, Army of Tennessee, concerning personal matters, with incidental comments on the course of the war and the activities of his unit. Also included are a letter, 1857, from Wallace at school in Rogersville, Tenn., to his sisters; a letter, 1861, from Wallace at school at the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in Princeton, N.J., to his sisters; an obituary, 1895, of Campbell Wallace (1806-1895), father of Thomas L. Wallace; and a letter, 1923, from Wallace's brother-in-law, Charles J. Martin, sending family mementoes to Thomas Wallace's son Will.

Campbell Wallace was a Tennessee entrepreneur. Prior to the Civil War, he was president of the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad. During the war, he rejected a brigadiership to stay with the railroad and help move troops.
